Kim Peterson, M.A., LPC-I, works as a full-time psychotherapist intern with MedCare Centers for Counseling and Play Therapy. She sees individuals ranging from childhood through adulthood on a wide variety of concerns, including anxiety, depression, and post trauma. She is especially interested in working with adolescents on issues surrounding school, friends, relationships, self-esteem, and divorce. Kim is also completing her specialization in play therapy, a unique approach to counseling children.
In 2007, Kim implemented a classroom curriculum for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade girls at a local middle school to address self-esteem, relationships, academic stressors, and social skills. Kim received so much positive response from the students and teachers that she decided to continue offering Girl Talk to the public.
During that time, Kim worked in private practice, where she saw individuals, children, adolescents, and adults, struggling with many issues, including major life crises, anxiety, depression, and anger. She also facilitated an adolescent divorce-recovery group and co-facilitated an adult divorce-recovery group. Kim spent time educating the group on the emotional and social effects they will face, led group member discussion about their own experiences, and encouraged healing through peer support.
Today, Kim also addresses issues specific to the special needs community. This includes working with the siblings and parents of children with special needs and providing therapeutic intervention for children with developmental disabilities and behavioral issues, including Autism, PDD, and ADD/ADHD. In addition, she is a Becoming a Love and Logic Parent® facilitator.
A note from Kim:
First of all, thank you for taking the time to get to know me. As a professional counselor, I believe that all people have the right to happiness and success and that emotional, spiritual, and physical health are key ingredients to reaching that potential. I understand that there are times when we all need to seek help from others. My role is not to judge, but to meet people where they are, providing the support and feedback that they need to meet their goals. My approach is a combination of empathy, encouragement, and directives. I also place great emphasis on education and prevention, which is why I offer regular community education on a variety of topics. If you or someone you know are struggling with something in your life, I encourage you to seek help from a professional counselor, minister, or someone you can trust, and not to allow the issue to grow. There is hope!
